Turning wastages into something useful…

“Let every individual and institution now thinks and act as a responsible trustee of Earth, seeking choices in ecology, economics and ethics that will provide a sustainable future, eliminate pollution, poverty and violence, awaken the wonder of life and foster peaceful progress in the human adventure.”
-John McConnell, founder of International Earth Day

For this day's activity was to collect recyclable materials that we can use in making Christmas decorations for the upcoming season.
The students were divided into four groups and also the volunteer-teachers were assigned to each group.
There will be a group who will make a life size Christmas tree; Christmas garlands, Christmas lanterns and the holy family / nativity scene (belen).

The first part of this day's major activity was to plan and illustrate the decorations that we will make using different recyclable materials.

After that, the students together with the volunteer-teachers had a "field trip" around Helping Land to gather materials like plastic bottles, tin cans, plastic cups, etc. These will be used in making those Christmas decorations. We were given an hour to do the scavenging. Our students serve as our tour guides.
At 10:30 a.m., we were back in the covered area for the kids' recess.

Through this activity, we volunteer-teachers were able to see Helping Land on a greater perspective. Despite of the muddy and super slum area, we enjoyed the searching of garbage that we can possibly turn it into awesome Christmas decorations.

We, volunteer-teachers, realized that we were very lucky enough to have a comfortable home and we now more understand our students’ lives. Helping Land has been their home since they were born and we can truly say that they belong to the poorest of the poor families here in Manila.

We would like to thank our sponsors for the foods given to the kids during their recess. God bless you!
