"Mom, I'm Home!” (A short story)

She hates me and I hate her more!

Here she goes again, saying all the things she wants to say at her highest level of voice. She never failed me as my everyday alarm clock!
She’s the best nagger in town! And ever as usual I will get shamed again of our neighbors. They always thought that I am the black sheep of this family. No job, no money or savings, no career, no life and at the age of 21, still living with my parent. While my older sister were already happily married and has a great job and  a great house few blocks away from us, here I am still depending on my mom.
But what can I do, they let me took up a course which I don’t like. They shouldn’t be surprised if I gave them a red class card, much worse, no subjects at all.
I didn’t enroll for this school year and took the money with me. Had a great vacation on a beach with my friends and bought a new camera.
Photography is my passion and that’s the idea my family can’t accept. They said that I can’t earn anything from it and also as per them it was just a waste of money and time taking stupid and worthless pictures.
And I just don’t care what they think!  I will do what I want to do! I’m 21 and I have my own life to live. So bear with me guys. Sorry to disappoint you.
“Lucy, I’m not yet done! Come back here!” mom shouted at me.
And ever as usual I don’t look back and just continued to walk out of that hell house.

“Come on, sis! Just give me some money. I promise to pay you,” I begged to my sister.
“But mom said I shouldn’t give you any more, since you were just wasting it. Why don’t you find a job to support your need?” she told me.
Here she nags at me too. She really looks like mom!
“I’m currently finding so lend me money as my allowance for the first months,” I said to her.
“Months?” she repeated what I said.
“Yes, months. Until I find a better job,”
She tapped her own forehead, “you’re really impossible Lucy!”
“Come on, just lend me! I promised I will pay you,”
After long hours of convincing my sister she finally gave me money.
I went to a seminar for photography and there I learned different techniques of capturing images at different angles.
I also had the chance to meet new people with my same passion. One of it was Brandy. He’s nice and he’s also cute. But I do like more his shots. They were amazing even though we were still both amateurs.
“I wish to have a job with this passion,” I told him.
“That’s not a problem. I have an uncle who owns a photo shop. Maybe you can work there? I will refer you to him,” he suggested and handed me a calling card.
Oh, what an angel in disguised!
My eyes wide opened, “really? You can do that for me?”
“But of course! Why not? He needs an assistant and maybe you can fit with it,” he said.
Out of happiness, I hugged him tight! “Thank you so much! You’re such an angel here on earth!”
Oopps! It was a bit awkward to embrace someone you met for the first time. I just realized that when I felt that he was shocked when I jumped at him. He’s taller than me and has a great cut of muscles on his shoulders.
“I’m sorry. I was too happy,” I said shyly to him.
He then laughed and I knew I blushed.
“What about you? What is your job?” I changed the strange blew of air around us.
“A manager of a financing company,”
“Then what are you doing here?” I asked again this time curiously. What the hell is doing of a manager at this kind of event?
“Photography is my hobby and that explains everything,”
He has a point.
“Oh I see,” that’s what I can only say.
I glanced at my risk watch and realized what the time already is. For sure mom will nag again if I came home late. I just hate her voice yelling at me, “I think I have to go home now. Well, see you then?” I told him.
 “Okay bye!” he said.
Now it was me who’s shocked when he kissed me on my left cheek and embraced me once again.
I just wish he’s still single but I doubt because I believe that a man who already has a great job maybe already have his own family.
I went home tired.
“Where have you been, Mary Luisa?!” it was mom. I just hate my full name same as the way she nags at me.
“Around. Finding a job,” I answered shortly.
“Where the hell is around?! Answer me rightfully!”
“The hell you care about what I say?!” I said to her. I am tired and actually I don’t want to argue with her but she just pushed me through to answer back.
“The hell I care for you! For your future! For your life! You’re not getting younger anymore, and so was I! We just want the best life for you, Luisa! Can’t you get that?!” it’s already late at night but here we go again, shouting at each other despite of the time.
“You couldn’t give me the best because you’re not giving it to me! I’m not Leny that you can dictate what you want for her. I’m different! The so-called black sheep of this family, can’t you just live with that? Because me, I am already used to with your endless nagging!”
She slapped me at my face.
It was the first time. No, actually second. The last one when I was 14 when I sneaked out to attend a wild party.
“Get out of this house if you were tired of my voice. I am already tired of you that I just don’t know how to deal with you, brat!” she then finally said and went to her room.
I also ran to my room and sob at my pillow.
Maybe she was right. I have to get out of here, to get rid of her.

Early that morning, I meet Mr. Robert. The owner of the photo shop and he just hired me. I was so happy! I looked around the photo shop and saw a vacant room. I asked him if I could stay there and he just said yes. Actually it was the former room of his former assistant.
I went home and started to pack my things. Mom was not home during that time. And so I was glad that there’s nobody who will nag nor shout at me. I left this hell home that nobody knows where I will go.

For the next days, I have been so busy assisting my boss in doing his job as professional hired photographer and I have learned many things from him.
Brandy was visiting me during his spare time. We also used to date and I really found him nice. I also already knew that he’s still single.
Well, that’s good news, isn’t it? But I never heard him saying that he likes me, maybe not yet. Haha!
I was busy assisting my boss when my phone rang. I was surprised when I have found out who the caller was.
It was mom.
I didn’t answer it and I just kept my phone on ringing.
“Answer it. I know it’s important. You have to talk to her,” he advised me. He acts not only my boss but also as a father. My real father died two years ago. He’s stricter than my mom. And when he died, I know I shouldn’t be glad but that was the only time I had enough strength to pursue what I really wanted to do.
“Hello?”
I am expecting an angry tone but this words made my eyes wet, “Liz, where are you? Why aren’t you coming home yet?”
I cleared my throat before answering her question, “I’m at work,” I informed her.
“When are you coming home?” she asked again.
“I have my own pad.”
“When are you coming home?”
“I don’t know. I’m busy,”
“Okay, just visit me here when you have time. I’ll be waiting,” she ended the call.
I rushed to my room and made a free flow of my tears.
I know she loves me. I have just felt it.

Brandy invited me to a late movie and I accepted it.
I told him not only what happened today but also my whole story.
And only in front of him I cried my heart out. This is the first time I told someone about my personal life.
I was crying then when he wiped my tears using his bare hand.
“You should go home. Your mom loves you,” he said.
I looked at him but I didn’t say anything.
“You must go home. Tell her everything you wanted to say. And also include that there’s someone who’s willing to love you same as she does to you.”
I was confused. To whom is he referring?
My question on mind got a clear answer, “And it’s me.”
He sealed my tears with a kiss. And I stopped crying.
It was already late at night, I opened the door and I saw her on the couch watching her favorite drama on dvd.
“Mom, I’m home….” I controlled my tears from falling.
“Have you eaten your dinner already?” she asked.
“Yes, with Brandy,” I told her.
“I hope to meet him soon. I have cleaned your room. I will just finish this drama and I will soon go to sleep, too.” She then said.

It’s glad to be home.
